GXSM for Windows - Gnome X Scanning Microscopy - is a powerful graphical interface for any kind of 2D and 3D (multilayered 2D mode) data acquisition methods, especially designed for scanning probe microscopy (SPM).

GXSM provides various methods for 2D data (of various types: byte, short, long, double) visualization and manipulation. We are currently using it for scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning angle resolved light scattering (SARLS), and spot profile analysis of low-energy electron diffraction (SPA-LEED). The project was founded at the Institute for Solid State Physics 2 Leading developer of GXSM is Percy Zahl3. The program was developed for Linux using the Gtk+/Gnome libraries for the graphical interface.

And best of all: it's free: GXSM is licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL, see C). Therefore, everyone can copy, use, and modify GXSM for his/her needs provided that the resulting software is again published under the GPL licence.

The main window provides two different functions: Firstly, it has a menu bar with pulldown menus. These menus provide the user with the usual File and Help menus which can be found in practically every mouse-driven software piece. Some of these pull-down menus interact with (Math) or start-up (Windows) other windows. Secondly, the main menu contains a large number of control fields which can be used, e.g., to control an instrument, or just display certain parameters.
