For purposes such as software development, GridinSoft Notepad has a code templates, scripting engine, search commands with regular expressions. DocPad

DocPad is a superior alternative to Notepad. Although it fills the same role, plain text editing, it has many advantages: 10-level undo, alphabetization, block indent/unindent, bookmark, case conversion, encoding conversion, file history, jump to line, jump to offset, keyboard macros, print preview, search and replace, spell checking, statistics, variable pitch font, and much more. It also includes a built-in calculator, calendar, and character map.

FileCarver

File Carver is a utility for editing binary data files that follow an arbitrary format that you specify. File Carver offers a completely new approach to binary file editing, when compared to the traditional use of a hex-editor. When using a hex-editor, you are forced to calculate the offset and the format of the data that you want to change, which, at times, can be nearly impossible (depending on the file format). On the other hand, with File Carver, you simply specify the format of the file prior to opening it, using an XML definition file, and you are automagically presented with a complete graphical user interface to edit the file. Traditionally, binary file formats have had the disadvantage that they were difficult to edit without custom-made programs that took a lot of man-hours to create. In contrast, textual files such as XML do not require anything more than a text editor to modify, but are burdened with their signficantly increased file size, and much slower loading times (since XML has to be parsed) when compared to binary file equivalents. With File Carver, you can have the best of both worlds. Your files will be regular binary files, and thus will take little space and load quickly, while being easy to edit with File Carver (once you define their format in some simple XML). Snip-It Pro

Snip-It Pro enables you to maintain a list of text snippets, organized in custom folders, that can be quickly inserted into any text document or application. The program docks to the left or right edge of your screen and allows you to simply drag&drop snippets to or from the sidebar. The snippets are stored as XML files in a local folder that can be shared with other installations across the network. Turbo Type

Turbo Type adds word-completion features to any text editor, email program or other text input fields. NFOpad

NFOpad is a small, fast and flexible combined nfo viewer and text editor. It is a clone of Microsoft's Notepad but with extra settings, and support for nfo files. The file extension is used to determine whether to use an ANSI or ASCII font. Some of the features: URL follow, color and font settings, printing, searching, extension determines font, shell integration, always on top, drag-n-drop, exit on ESC.

CatsCradle

CatsCradle is an aid for language translators that provides an easy way to translate web pages. While it does not do any translation, it extracts the text out of evey page and presents it in an easy to editable overview that allows you to translate the text portions without having to deal with any HTML code or other distractions. The built-in editing screen allows for side-by-side editing, as well as optional real-time browser preview of the translated page. Additional features include a built in glossary that can suggest appropriate words and phrases while you are translating, project file catalog with word count and more. CatsCradle can also handle .hhc and .hhk files for translating of .chm help files. And of course, you can also use the tool to edit text on any web page without translating edit, so it can a also handy tool for webmasters that need some quick no-code text editing.

QJot

QJot is a small, rich text editor that can open and save .doc files. It offers most common editing functions, including text formatting, inserted images and objects, paragraph/line spacing, undo and more. It supports drag and drop, offers a recent documents list, word count and more. QJot also includes a spell checker, however it was not working properly during our review.

ZuluPad

ZuluPad is a notepad-type editor that combines simple notes management with a desktop wiki concept that allows you to link words to additional content within the same zulu file. To link a word, you can simply highlight it and click the Link button in the toolbar to open a new page within the document where you can enter any information related to the linked word (definitions, contact details etc.). Once you have linked a word within a zulu file, the same word will automatically be cross-referenced on any pother page in the same document. A zulu file can have unlimited pages and links, and everything is contained within a sigle file. The actual text editing features are very basic though, ZuluPad does not support text formatting, font settings and many other features usually found in text editors.

Miraplacid Text Driver

Miraplacid Text Driver enables you to extract text from any printable document regardless of the format (as long as you can open, view and print it). The program installs as a virtual printer driver and is available from the Print dialog. The extracted text can be previewed and then saved to a file (Text or XML format), uploaded to an FTP server, copied to the clipboard or sent by email. PSPad Editor

PSPad editor is a programmers editor with support for multiple syntax highlighting profiles. It comes with a hex editor, CP conversion, text differences, templates, macros, spellcheck option, auto-completion, Code Explorer and much more. The program is pre-configured for the most popular programming languages (VB, C++, SQL, PHP, ASP, Python etc.) and you can further customize the syntax settings. CSVed

CSVed allows you to manipulate any CSV file, separated with any separator. Additional features include drag and drop, Find/Replace, Goto Line, time stamp and more. Amazingly small with 70 kb, including the installer.

Files of any size can be loaded, and unlimited undo and redo are supported for all editing operations. Use the Inspector to edit data in a number of different formats. A set of editing and analysis tools are supplied including find-and-replace, binary compare, histograms, check sums, ASCII/EBCDIC conversion, importing and exporting, highlighting, bookmarks, and printing. An integrated expression calculator using C syntax is supplied and scripts may be written to modify files.
