MakeUp Pilot is a simple image correction tool, that is designed to remove and correct small skin blemishes and other defects from digital portraits. The software is very easy to use, mostly due to the fact that it lacks any options or configurations - just point the cursor at the blemishes and click to remove them, one by one. MakeUp Pilot is extremely simplistic, and will probably not appeal to more advanced users, as there are much better values available that offer touch-up as part of their much extended feature set. If you`re in a hurry and have money to burn, give it a try, otherwise we`ll suggest to try some others first.

StudioLine Photo

StudioLine Photo allows you to manage, edit, and share your digital images from a single application. It offers various image editing tools, as well as features to send images by email, burn them on a CD or create a web gallery. The Macintosh-style interface allows you to view your image collections as thumbnails, and apply effects, edit selected images, view EXIF and ITPC data and more. Additional features include timeline browsing, user defined image categories, histogram, support for RAW files and more. StudioLine Photo also allows you to create create cards, calendars and CD covers.

Recomposit

Recomposit is a digital matting and composition tool, that enables you to replace backgrounds in photos. It can work in chroma key mode (Bluescreen) or based on a manual inside/outside edge selection by the user that separates the subject from the background. The program works well, especially with chroma key backgrounds, but requires a lot of patience since interface is slow and not very intuitive.

Tux Paint

Tux Paint is an easy-to-use drawing program, designed for children ages 3 and up. It offers a simple interface, with large, colorful buttons and sound effects. Even though it is designed for kids, the program is not limited to simple paint operations, but includes a good array of features like paint effects (rainbow, fading, sparkles etc.), auto-fill, text insertion, shapes, image gallery, image stamps and more. The program can either run in normal windowed mode, or full screen. Tux Paint is easy enough to be used by young children, yet provides enough features to keep them using it as they grow older.

Passport Photo

Passport Photo enables you to create and print your own passport pictures from digital photos. It includes a cropping tool that assures that your image is compliant with USA, EU, UK and Brazilian requirements for passport photos, and you can also create your own specifications for other countries. You can either print the photos directly on your printer, or save it as JPG file that can be developed as 4x6 by any print shop (and then cut). Other features include image adjustments, resolution check, photo preview and tips for shooting passport photos. The trial version adds a watermark to the prints.

AKVIS Enhancer

AKVIS Enhancer is a Photoshop compatible plug-in that helps you improve your images by improving textures and revealing fine details. It can improve appearance of underexposed, overexposed and mid-tone areas of a photo without manipulating exposure settings. It achieves this by intensifying color transitions between pixels, rather than overall brightness or contrast adjustments. AKVIS Enhancer allows you to customize the intensity of the manipulation, as well as specific adjustments. We have seen some very good results, even images that looked fine before had some significant improvements in overall details and appearance.

Photolightning

Photolightning is a software package to print, email, and share your digital photos. It works directly with your digital camera, allows you to view, select and process your photos quickly and easily. It uses a 3-Step interface that lets you select, edit and process your images from easy to use menu choices. You can also fix your photos by adjusting backlight and red eye errors and perform color corrections. In addition you can sharpen, rotate and crop your images as needed and also label them with comments. You can then choose to print your photos, email them , transfer them to a memory card, create a photo album or create a HTML slideshow that can be viewed or emailed to friends. Photolightning offers support for ShutterFly, Snapfish, Walmart.com, EZ Prints and FlipAlbum and offers easy to use print templates for common picture sizes (wallets, 4x6, 8x10 etc). Some additional features include CD/DVD burning, posting to photo blogs, built-in thumbnail browser and batch processing including resize, change format, captions/watermarks, remove EXIF, rename, and change timestamp.

NeoPaint is a powerful paint and image editor, with support for Animated GIF, JPEG, BMP, ICO, PCX, TIF and more. It offers many paint and photo retouching tools, natural media and custom brushes, 2D/3D shapes, soften, sharpen, special effects, masking, textures, color separations, stamps, multi-level undo, rulers, grids and gradients and more. It also includes an image browser and a screen capture capture utility. NeoPaint is a well featured image editor - what really bothered me though, were the oversized and non-customizable tool button bars, that take up a large amount of the interface.

Artizen ZE

This image editor allows you to edit, print, share, and organize all your image files It offers wizards, 20 tutorials and context based help tips. It can import and export 25 file formats, scan images, and correct color, rotate and resize images. It also includes editable vector shapes masking tools and screen capture options. It allows you to add text layers and effects, add borders and picture frames, use filters and build your own custom filters with the built-in scripting IDE.

AKVIS SmartMask

AKVIS SmartMask is an efficient selection tool that saves you time and is fun to use. Never before has selection been so simple! There are many occasions when you have to make a selection. When processing an image, you will often need to mark up an area to which an effect or a correction should be applied. Photo collage and photo montage creation requires thorough selection of objects. However, making selection can be a painstaking job because many objects don't have clearly defined edges and fade into the background. Just try selecting yourself on a group photo. AKVIS SmartMask makes even a difficult selection as easy as pie. Now, you can spend less of your time on selection of objects and more of it on creativity. The idea is so simple that you will feel like a child in drawing classes: there are two pencils (red and blue); you draw a line with the blue pencil inside the object you want to select (for example, yourself on a group photo), and with the red pencil - some lines outside the object, to define the areas that should be cut out (other guys in the photo). The program miraculously reads your thoughts and makes the selection you want - understanding where the borders of the object end. There are three modes tailored to different selection types: Sharp, Soft and Complex. For example, in the Soft mode a green pencil is added, that helps you to define difficult parts - fluff, hair, fur. In cases where the selected object stands against a background of a similar color range, or the object's edges are uneven, you can use the touch-up brush in the Complex mode. The program even allows you to get rid of the color tint left on the cutout object by the environment. In most cases objects on a photo are not evenly lighted, the cutout object can have shades and colors reflected from the nearby objects. Such color shades can be absolutely inappropriate on a new background: for example, hair having a blue cast from the sky or a green shade from the trees, shadows of objects on the clothes. This mask tool helps to get rid of the unwanted color shades.

Background Remover is a Photoshop compatible plug-in that enables you to remove the background from an image with minimum efforts and without the need for any advanced editing skills. Just follow the instructions on how to mark and select the object that you want to extract and fine-tune the results with the provided editing tools. The program does not require you to make an exact selection, defining the rough outlines of the object is often enough to achieve a decent result that can be perfected with the defringe brush, mask adjustments and other techniques.

SPX Graphic Editor

SPX Graphic Editor is a basic image editor, mostly intended for simple editing or enhancing of existing graphics. It includes a set of standard image editing tools, as well as a variety of image filters. The program is mostly useful for enhancement of screen captures, and offers several filters that are specifically designed for that purpose, including a drop shadow option, spotlight and magnify, as well as an option to add text annotations. Even though the program is mostly useful for enhancement of screen captures, it does not include any screen capture capabilities (as most other graphic editors).

The GIMP

The Windows version of a popular Linux graphics editor and image manipulation software. Intocartoon Pro

Intocartoon Professional Edition eanbles you to convert your photos into cartoon-style drawings or black and white sketches. You can adjust the drawing style and detail to include and then add a coloring layer based on the original image colors. This layer can also be adjusted to achieve the desired effect. There are no presets available, so you need to play with the control sliders and use the preview as a guidance until you achieve the desired effect. Intocartoon also provides standard drawing tools that you can use to further enhance the image or to add speech bubbles. The image can then be exported to JPG, BMP or proprietary P2C format.

Photobie

Photobie is an image editor that offers all the standard editing and paint tools, as well as image layers and Photoshop (.8bf) plug-ins as well s several other features that are normally not found in free image editors. The program includes screen capture tools, an image browser, a GIF animation tool and a Flash player, as well as photo frames, channel adjustments and more. The documentation is somewhat lacking but an active support forum can help you along if you run into problems.

PhotoArtist

PhotoArtist lets you turn your photos into beautiful artworks. It offers a selection of painting styles that can be applied to your original image, using brushes of your choice.
