FileTypesMan

FileTypesMan is an alternative to the 'File Types' tab in the 'Folder Options' of Windows. It displays the list of all file extensions and types registered on your computer. For each file type, the following information is displayed: Type Name, Description, MIME Type, Perceived Type, Flags, Browser Flags, and more. FileTypesMan also allows you to easily edit the properties and flags of each file type, as well as it allows you to add, edit, and remove actions in a file type. FileTypesMan doesn't require any installation process or additional DLL files. In order to start using it, simply copy the executable file (FileTypesMan.exe) to any folder you like, and run it. After running it, you should wait a few seconds until the file types list is loaded. If the loading process is too slow, it's recommended to turn off the icons loading (Options->Don't Load Icons in menu), so in the next time that you run FileTypesMan, the loading process will be faster. The main window of FileTypesMan contains 2 panes. The upper pane displays the list of all extensions/file types registered on your computer. When you select a single file type in the upper pane, the lower pane displays the list of all actions of the selected type. 'Replace File Type For Selected Extension' option (F4) Sometimes, when you install a new software, it automatically replaces the file types associated with various file extensions. This means that when you double-click the file, the new installed program is opened, instead of the old one. The icon of the extension is usually also replaced to the icon of the new application. The 'Replace File Type' feature allows you to set the file extension back to the original file type. In order to do that, select the desired file extension in the main window of FileTypesMan, and press F4. You'll get a long list of available file types on your computer. Find and select the previous file type that handled the extension, and choose 'Ok'. Desktop Refresh Each time that you make a change in the properties of a file type, FileTypesMan automatically initiate a general desktop refresh, so your changes will take affect immediately, even for opened Explorer windows. However, on slow computers, this desktop refresh might consume a fair amount of CPU resources, and even hang the entire operating system for a few seconds. If you want to avoid this desktop refresh on every change that you make, simply disable the automatic refresh, by unchecking the option under the following menu: Options->Automatic Desktop Refresh. You can always initiate a desktop refresh when you need it, simply by selecting 'File->Refresh Desktop Now' from the main menu.

FolderHighlight

FolderHighlight enables you to mark important folders in a different color icon to make them easier to spot when browsing through Windows Explorer. Even though Windows already allows you to customize folder icons for this purpose, FolderHighlight is a little easier to use as it integrates into the Explorer right-click menu, so you can quickly mark any folder without having to go through additional dialogs. Only works with folders, not with documents.

Directory Lister Pro

Directory Lister Pro lets you list all the files you have in selected directories on your hard disk, cd-rom, floppy etc. You can select individual directories and then save the list as text, CSV or HTML file. You can customize the report output in many aspects, include or exclude details, specify sorting, background color and more. When you print a file list, you can include standard file information like file name, extension, type, owner and attributes as well as executable file information (EXE, DLL, OCX) like file version, description, company. Also multimedia properties (MP3, AVI, WAV, JPG, GIF, BMP) like track, title, artist, album, genre, video format, bits per pixel, frames per second, audio format, bits per channel can be listed. Another set of columns you can print is for Microsoft Office files (DOC, XLS, PPT) so you can see document title, author, keywords etc. without opening these files one after another. For each file it is also possible to obtain its CRC32, MD5 and SHA-1 hash number so you can verify the file has not been modified. Extensive number of options allows you to completely customize the visual look of the output, so you can change sorting, column order, display format, create links to files and change HTML styles. You can limit the list file by applying a filter for filename, date, size or attributes. Directory Lister Pro can also be integrated into the context menu of Windows Explorer so you don't even need to open the program to generate listings. Command line interface is supported for automated listings that can be run from Windows Task Scheduler.

Where Is It?

WhereIsIt? Lite is a limited but free version of the standard release. It only has read capabilities and can not be used to make or modify catalog data, but it can be freely used and distributed with your catalogs. Serving as a catalog browser, it can be used as a front-end to media like CD-ROMs, included with many magazines today, or just an easy way to allow your clients or friends to use and browse your catalogs. While WhereIsIt? Lite is limited in functionality compared to the standard edition, it still has all the powerful browsing functions with searching and reporting support found in the full release. Only functionality that would in any way modify catalogs is missing in the Lite release. WhereIsIt Lite as a freeware program also does not impose any of the limitations present in the unregistered shareware edition of the full version.
