Xlpd
|
Xlpd is an LPD (Line Printer Daemon) software for MS Windows platforms. When applying Xlpd, your local PC with a printer becomes a print server where the print jobs from various remote systems are requested and processed in networked environment.
Xlpd helps you print remote files locally without manually downloading them into your local computer. When you are connected to a remote UNIX/Linux system with Xmanager or Xshell software and want to print some data of the remote system, just enter print command on the terminal prompt.
Xlpd Features:
1. LPD (Line Printer Daemon) protocol (RFC 1179)
RFC1179 defines a standard method by which print jobs can be transferred using the TCP/IP protocol between hosts. Each host with the printer daemon running waits for print jobs through TCP port #515.
2. Multi-Queue Support
This allows users to create multiple queues on Xlpd and have different settings on each queue such as different printer, formatting option, and printing action.
3. Printer setup
You can choose a printer when multiple printers are attached on your system, and configure its settings.
4. Printing with and without formatting
You can send text files to the printer without formatting. And also you can format the files with your preferred fonts and layout before sending to the printer.
5. CRLF Conversion
To print text files of a UNIX system, Xlpd converts CR (Carriage Return) to CRLF (Carriage Return & Line Feed) automatically.
6. Job list view for print job status
Offers status view for requested print jobs from receiving to printing.
7. Manipulating print jobs
You can delete finished print jobs, print pending jobs, and refresh job list.
8. LPQ/LPSTAT commands service
Supports Unix LPQ/LPSTAT commands.
9. LPD port option
You can configure the LPD port to a different one than the default port, 515.
10. Message window for errors and logs
Offers a message window for critical errors and logs while Xlpd is running.
Other features
1. Runs on Windows 98/ME and NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista
2. Supports print setup
3. Supports CRLF conversion
4. Supports to append FF(Form Feed)
5. Supports font and margin setting
6. Supports UNIX LPQ/LPSTAT commands
7. Allows to change LPD port number instead of the default port #515
8. Offers message window for error or logs
LPD Protocol
LPD(Line Printer Daemon) is a widely used print server protocol on TCP/IP network computing environment. LPD uses TCP protocol; the default port number is 515. The detailed information about LPD protocol is described in RFC1179 (L. McLaughlin III, 1990.8).
For a print job, an LPD server software should be running on your PC. The LPD software runs on TCP port number 515 and waits for print jobs. In a UNIX system, a user requests a print job using an lp, lpr or pr command, and the job will be sent to your PC over the network. Then the LPD server software running on your PC receives this job request and processes it using the printing options set inside the program. At this time, LPD protocol is used for communication.
