Wipe Drive
|
Today, with identity theft on the rise, ordinary families typically own shredders to destroy credit card and bank statements or anything that may have account numbers or social security numbers on them. But, what about floppy disks or the hard disks in computers that are retired from service?
WipeDrive 1.0 is a software that allows the user the ability of eradicating any data that may reside in unallocated blocks on a hard drive or a floppy disk. Any user who maintains sensitive data on either floppy disks or system hard drives will find this utility to be useful.
Key Benefits
1. Securely eradicates data in unallocated disk segments.
2. Allows the user to specify the number of times residual data is overwritten.
Note for Vista and Windows 7 users
Because WipeDrive accesses system level resources to overwrite the unallocated storage media blocks, the utility must run with administrator privileges.
Why WipeDrive?
When a file is deleted, the operating system typically alters the directory (folder) entry for the file without actually removing the data. When one considers the vast amount of data that the typical computer actually stores on its hard disk, it can easily be seen how much can be left as residue on the drive.
Historically, computer owners have reformatted floppy disks and hard drives that have held sensitive data. This worked reasonably well when hard drives could be initialized at the same low level that was used by the drive's manufacturer. With the size of modern hard drives and the fact that today's operating systems do not provide access to this level of formatting. Not to mention the fact that such a formatting process would take an exceptionally long time.
WipeDrive addresses these issues by overwriting each unallocated block of storage with 'nonsense' data for each iteration requested. This drastically reduces the impactfulness of program or manual attempts to examine the drive's media for any residual data.
What media types can be wiped?
WipeDisk will eradicate residual data on media that has been formatted as NTFS, FAT, or FAT32. These are the most common media formats for floppy disks and hard drives used by Windows operating systems. It will not recognize CD-RWs or DVD-RWs.
