The update process is done from removable media (CD, DVD or an external hard drive) instead, which is enabled by the update program.

This software provides an alternative method to using the Microsoft Update Service to update a Windows-based computer system. A 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server, Vista, or Windows 7 Operating System and/or Windows 2000/XP/2003/2007 Office installation can be updated to the latest level of Microsoft service packs, security updates, frameworks and bug fixes without needing to connect directly to the internet during the actual update process.
