In Windows 7 the Show desktop button has been moved to the right side of the taskbar. This applet called "Show Desktop Button" can be used to add a Vista style Show desktop button to the left side of the taskbar. In addition, files pinned to the button's jump list can be launched by their associated viewer.

Note that for a jump list to work Windows 7 generates a registry sub key of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Applications.
You can run "Showdesktop.exe -regjp" to restore the sub key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Applications\Showdesktop.exe for this application.
