Scribus is an open-source program that brings professional page layout to Linux/Unix, MacOS X, OS/2 and Windows.Scribus supports professional features, such as CMYK color, spot color, separations, ICC color and robust commercial grade PDF.

Scribus is an open-source program that brings award-winning professional page layout to Linux/Unix, MacOS X, OS/2 and Windows desktops with a combination of "press-ready" output and new approaches to page layout. Underneath the modern and user friendly interface, Scribus supports professional publishing features, such as CMYK color, separations, ICC color management and versatile PDF creation.

Scribus supports many major graphic formats including most all of the standard ones used in DTP in addition to SVG import and export.

Printing is done via its own internal level 3 PS driver, including support for font embedding and sub-setting with True Type, Type 1 and Open Type fonts. The internal driver fully supports Level 2 Postscript constructs and very large set of Level 3.

PDF support includes transparency, encryption and a large set of the PDF 1.4 spec including interactive PDF's form fields, annotations and bookmarks. No other application is capable of producing such a wide range of PDF features on Linux, Unix like operating systems.

The file format is based on XML and fully documented. Unlike proprietary binary file formats, even damaged documents, may be partially recovered with a simple text editor - sometimes a challenging problem with other page layout programs.

There's no toolbox down the left-hand side like InDesign, no palette bar down the right like CorelDraw and no formatting toolbar at the top, like Publisher. Coming to Scribus for the first time, you'd be forgiven for thinking it has no attribute control at all, other than its menus. In fact, there are all kinds of property and other floating panels of controls, that are switched on from the Windows menu. So why not switch one on by default, so we know they're there?

In fact, the design of the UI lends itself well to DTP, as the clutter of many commercial programs is removed, leaving more of the current page on view. By pulling up just the panels you need for the layout elements you're working on, you get quick access to your document all the time.

Scribus is powerful software that helps you create great looking documents of all kinds. It also comes with a lot of support options to help you achieve the best result. There is an enthusiastic and friendly community around Scribus that assists beginner and pro alike.

Underneath the modern and user friendly interface, Scribus supports professional publishing features, such as CMYK color, separations, Spot Colors, ICC color management and versatile PDF creation.

Scribus relies on other open source applications for some functions. For example, it uses the Gimp for bitmap editing and Ghostscript for producing PDF files. There's little sense in reinventing the wheel and it's good to see the developers working with other projects - it handles imports from OpenOffice well, too.
