RegEnumRS
|
RegEnumRS is an offline and online registry editor for startup entries. It supports enabling / disabling and deleting startup entries on a system when used from a boot CD such as BartPE and Active Boot CD, or when the system is on a non-boot or external drive. It can also be used on the active boot drive. Also, RegEnumRS contains a registry monitor tool when used on an active system.
Registry editing can easily render your system unbootable! Don't assume that just because you see an entry on the list and you can disable it that your system will still work if you do. RegEnumRS merely shows everything that loads when Windows starts and does not warn you if deleting or disabling it will render your system unusable. When in doubt, don't! When you disable an entry, it is still present and can be re-enabled. If you delete the autorun of an entry, the entry is removed from the registry and cannot be re-enabled except by registry restoration. Exceptions to this are Drivers and Services which are actually set to DISABLED (4) in the registry and although they are no longer visible on the RegEnumRS list can be re-enabled.
RegEnumRS works by loading the offline registry files SOFTWARE and SYSTEM into the current operating system registry. This allows use of system API's which are very fast and efficient. These files are loaded as _REMOTE_SOFTWARE and _REMOTE_SYSTEM. These names are also used when registry Monitoring of the current OS is enabled and a snapshot of the startup registry keys is loaded. By default when RegEnumRS starts, it looks for all remote OS installations on drives other than the current operating system drive. It does this by looking at either the BOOT.INI file in the root of the drive for 2000 / XP or the BCD database for Vista / Windows 7. The first one that is found is loaded and the others are listed as menu options. If no remote operating systems are found the Current Operating System registry is loaded.
When RegEnumRS is started in Registry Monitoring mode, offline operating systems are ignored, a previous snapshot of registry startup keys is loaded, and the current operating system registry and file system is enumerated and monitored in real time for changes. This uses about 10% CPU or less every 5 seconds and uses relatively little resources due to the use of system API's and since a registry is loaded into memory already. If you are installing new program you will need to ALLOW CHANGES in order for the program to function properly, depending on which changes you allow or deny. However, many program installations include links to the software in either the registry or the start menu that may be undesired.
RegEnumRS also enumerates file based startup locations including the Start Menu and Scheduled Tasks.
