QuickGamma

QuickGamma 3 is a Diagnostic Software product from quickgamma.de, get 5 Stars SoftSea Rating, QuickGamma is a small utility software to calibrate a monitor without having to buy expensive hardware tools. It is a free utility to calibrate the screen by manually adjusting the gamma.
Essential for designers or professional image, the calibration of the display is a crucial element of the digital production chain.
Also called contrast ratio, gamma can correct the record displays to render better the variations in brightness and detail images.
Windows automatically applies gamma correction, but you may need to refine this set for a gamma of 2.2, the standard for Windows, Internet and digital photography.
To calibrate your monitor, you must follow the procedure detailed step by step and in French in using QuickGamma.
Several banners, you help to find the optimal settings but you also may need documentation of your monitor.
QuickGamma adjusts the gamma-General or individually for each primary color, red, green and blue. Un bouton permet de lancer l'application au d marrage de Windows pour appliquer automatiquement la correction. A button to launch the software at Windows startup to automatically apply the correction.
Why do you need QuickGamma?
The relationship between the input signal and the luminance of a monitor is not linear but exponential with gamma being the exponent. Monitor gamma values usually range between 1.4 and 3.2.
Because only a gamma value of 1 resembles a linear relationship, a gamma correction is necessary to achieve maximum reproduction quality. A monitor gamma value of 2.2 has become the de facto standard for Windows, the Internet and the digital photography.
Under Windows a gamma correction is already automatically applied. This yields a linear luminance distribution for monitors with a real gamma of 2.2. Because most computer monitors do not have a real gamma of 2.2 an additional correction is required. With QuickGamma you can calibrate your monitor to a gamma value of 2.2 which in conjunction with the automatic gamma correction yields a linear luminance distribution for every monitor.

How to use QuickMonitorProfile
At software start "QuickMonitorProfile" reads the chromaticity values of the connected monitor and adds the entry "Installed monitor" to the "Chromaticity coordinates" list box. If the monitor's chromaticity values cannot be found a message is displayed in a pop up window and the list box defaults to the ITU-R BT.709 chromaticity values.
To create a monitor profile, follow these steps:
1. Select the monitor.
Select the monitor you want to create a profile for.
2. Select the "Chromaticity coordinates" of your choice.
Select "Installed monitor" to create a profile for the selected monitor. You can also create a profile for one of the well known standard chromaticity values or select "Custom values" to enter your own chromaticity values. The x and y fields for red, green and blue are read only fields unless you select "Custom values".
3. Select the "Media white point" that matches your monitor's white point.
The printing businesses usually work with a D50 media white point (approximately 5000 K). The most common media white point for digital imaging processing is D65 (approximately 6504 K), which very closely matches the media white point of common printing paper. Selecting the chromaticity values for a standard profile in step 1 will preset the white point to the default white point for that standard profile.
4. Select the appropriate "Target gamma".
Select the appropriate gamma value for your monitor.
Notice: If you calibrate your monitor with "QuickGamma" all applications will work with a well calibrated monitor. If you do not calibrate your monitor with "QuickGamma" and only use the monitor profile, only programs that are color management aware will work with a well calibrated monitor. Most applications are not color management aware nor is Windows itself.
5. Accept the "Profile name" or change it.
The profile name for profiles based on the EDID chromaticity values consists of the monitor make and model of the EDID information.
For all other profiles the profile name is the name of the selected chromaticity values.
The profile name of course can be changed to whatever you like.
6. Select "Options".
* Install profile
Before a color management profile can be used under Windows it needs to be integrated it the Windows color management. Normally you do this by right clicking the profile in the Windows Explorer and selecting install. By selecting the "Install profile" option the newly created profile will be installed automatically.
* Make default profile
Under Windows a monitor profile needs to be defined as the default monitor profile to be used by color management aware programs. Normally you do this in the display's properties dialog. By selecting the "Make default profile" option the newly created profile will be defined as the default profile.
7. Push Create button
When you push the create button a "Save as..." dialog will be displayed with the "monitor make and model" filled in as file name. Invalid filename characters in "monitor make and model" will be converted to blank characters automatically. Of course you can change the file name to what ever you like.
The folder is automatically set to "QuickMonitorProfile". This folder has been created by "QuickMonitorProfile" as a subfolder of the "My Documents" folder (Windows XP) or the "Documents" folder (Windows Vista and Windows 7). Of course you can change the folder to what ever you like. When the "Save as..." dialog is closed the new monitor profile will be created. If the respective options have been activated the profile will be installed and made the default profile.
Notice: Because Windows copies the installed profiles into a dedicated folder (for instance "C:\Windows\System32\Spool\Drivers\Color" for Windows XP) this folder should not be used for saving the newly created profile. Instead QuickMonitorProfile suggests the folder where it was installed to.
