Tired of using the classic Windows's Task Manager? Want to get more informations about the processes and applications loaded into your PC's memory, including sniffers and hooks? Advanced viruses, spyware and rootkits work by changing API results. This API is used by standard Task Manager. Most trojans and viruses put themselves to the autostart, andor, must run as a process, all of this without your knowledge. Of course having a good anti-virus and anti-trojans software is a must, but the key problem is that a certain trojanvirus may not be detected by this programs yet. Want to kill some harmful and unknown processes running on your computer? Be careful when ending a process. If you end an application, you will lose unsaved data. If you end a system service, some part of the system may not function properly. How should we do? Take it easy! A process monitor and manager can help you a lot. Here is an easy to use yet powerful enough process monitor and manager tool I will recommend to you. That is Process Viewer. Following are the detailed introductions of it. Follow me and view how excellent it is now!

Process Viewer is an enhanced task manager that displays detailed information about currently running processes. For each process it displays CPU and memory consumption, threads and module usage as well as startup information, file properties and more. Process Viewer also comes with a command line version that allows us to write scripts to check if a process is running, kill it, etc. we can double click on any module or process to get the full version information. We can save any view as a tab-separated text file by just pressing F2. We don't need to press the refresh "button" to get the updated list of all processes, Process Viewer periodically updates the process list for us. No special installation is required on Windows 95/98. Create a new, empty folder and place the files PRCVIEW.EXE and PRCVIEW.HLP there. For Windows NT4 we may also need a PSAPI.DLL.

Here are some key features and advantages of Process Viewer include:

The main window of Process Viewer shows us a list of running processes including information process Id, priority, and full path to the process module. We can sort columns by clicking on the column header. Note that although we don't need to have administrative privilege on Windows NT to run Process Viewer, list of task Process Viewer can access depends on our set of privileges.

Information about each loaded module including the module name, the module base address in process space, the module size and full to the loaded module path. We can display comprehensive version information by double-clicking the appropriate line in the main or module window.

Information about all process threads including threads Id and priority. Note that if Process Viewer uses Performance Data Helper to enumerate threads under Windows NT, it can take a few seconds at the first time to open the list of threads while Windows is loading all necessary libraries.

Information about all memory blocks belonging to the selected process. Contains information about base address, protection, size and state for each memory block. Information about all heaps allocated by the selected process. We can display heap memory blocks by double clicking on the appropriate heap in the list box.

Process Viewer displays version information about selected module. We can display version information by double-clicking the appropriate line in the main or module window.

Process Viewer provides just another way to kill a selected process. Note that killing a process can cause undesired results including loss of data and system instability. The process will not be given a chance to save its state or data before it is terminated. It is advisable to try the "Notify" button in the "Kill" dialog to close a GUI-based application first (via WM_SYSCOMMAND).

Process Viewer provides a nice way to attach a debugger to a running application. Process Viewer reads the "AeDebug" key and starts a registered debug application. Process Viewer allows us not only to select a process to debug but also to associate a particular project with it. This is especially useful while debugging an DLL that has a separate project. Associations are stored in the registry.

Process Viewer provides a process finder tool for us. With the Process Finder Tool we can find the process corresponding to a selected window. To find a process: Arrange our windows so that Process Viewer and the window of the desired process are visible. Press the Find Process button on the toolbar. Keep left mouse button pressed while dragging the Finder Tool to the desired window. Release mouse button. Process Viewer will select the corresponding process in the main view.

Process Viewer provides a process tree for us. It shows us the process hierarchy for all running processes. We can select the desired task by clicking on the process item in the Process Tree window.

Information about all loaded modules in the system including the module name, the module base address in process space, the module size and full to the loaded module path. Selecting a module from the module list shows only processes witch use a selected module. Selecting "Module Usage" again returns the main window to the original process list. We can display comprehensive version information by double-clicking the appropriate line in the window.

Process Viewer can show applications running on our computer. It shows all top-level window titles. We can select the desired task by clicking on the process item in this window. Double-click sends the selected application to the front.

Process Viewer provides configuration option for us, including: Start Minimized -Process Viewer starts minimized. This option is useful in combination with the "Use System Tray" option if we plan to place PrcView in the "Startup" folder. Use System Tray -Process Viewer places a small icon In the System Tray, hiding itself when minimized. Allow Multiply Instances - If turned "on", Process Viewer allows to start more than one instance of the program. If turned "off" the instance of Process Viewer that is already running will be activated. Set Refresh Times - Allows to specify refresh times for main/thread/module windows. If specified time is greater than zero, Process Viewer will refresh windows cyclically.

In addition, Process Viewer is free for us. It is a standalone software and does not need any extra software and hardware requirement. It works with most recent variants of Windows and its current version is 5.2.15.1. With all these features, simple interface, excellent usability and free trial - why are you still reading?
