Photo Help Desk (PHD) is a program for photographers that runs under Microsoft Windows. The goal of PHD is to enhance your enjoyment of viewing the collection of the digital images you have on your computer and to provide a level and ease of control over this viewing that is unprecedented in the industry.

The size of your collection of photographs can be anywhere from just a few images to hundreds of thousands of them. Collections of all sizes are handled with equal ease. Further, PHD can just as easily handle your images scattered through countless different folders as it can handle images contained in a single folder. You can then view them all seamlessly, in a single, customized Photo Show.

Photo Help Desk concentrates on viewing, organizing, ranking, and sharing your photographs.
1. Viewing is performed full-screen, either deliberately by pressing a button or automatically through screensaver activation. In either case, there are powerful ways in which you can optionally interact with each image as it is displayed.

2. Organizing includes batch resizing and renaming of photographs within folders and subfolders. It also includes setting subjective metadata, such as image titles, comments, and copyrights. Finally, you can view images based on objective metadata, such as shutter speed and f/stop.

3. Ranking (also called triaging) includes tools for the automatic separation of images into several levels of value to you as the photographer or artist.

4. Sharing is performed by emailing images to recipients of your choice, as PHD displays each image. PHD has its own email facility embedded directly within its image viewing facility.

With PHD you can view your photographs full screen, deliberately and interactively, in what PHD calls Photo Shows. In addition you can also configure PHD to run as the most powerful screensaver for photographers and artists ever developed. Whether run deliberately in a Photo Show or automatically in a screensaver, you can display your images in very versatile ways simultaneously on all of the monitors attached to your computer, no matter how many of them there are.

Usually the photos you view with PHD will be stored on your hard disk. But if you run PHD as a screensaver, the last thing you want the PHD screensaver to do is access your hard disk all night long after Windows has put your monitors to sleep. Therefore PHD detects this event and automatically stops the screensaver while the monitors are powered down. This saves power as well as needless wear and tear on your hard disk.

If you run PHD as a screensaver and you have a modern graphics card, it's worthwhile enabling PHD's image lap dissolve feature, in which a new image fades in on top of a previous image that fades out. The PHD lap dissolve runs at the rate of 120 full frames per second and modern graphics cards can keep up with this rate, making the PHD lap dissolve silky smooth and extremely attractive and relaxing, even on high resolution monitors with millions of pixels.

It is while viewing your images in Photo Shows that with extreme ease you can share them with others. When you come across an image you would like to share, you can email the image to recipients of your choice right there on the spot. As an option, you can also automatically scale the image down to a size more appropriate for email attachments, without affecting the original image on your PC.

While viewing your images in a PHD Photo Show, you can optionally show selected properties of each image just beneath the bottom edge of each photograph. Further, you can display these properties as low keyed or as prominently as you want. These properties might be the file path of the image, camera settings existing when the image was taken, or comments you added to the image after you have created it. Photographers might know these properties as image metadata, which are embedded directly in the image files themselves.
