You will find a good support in these (and other) cases with the Media Analyst software, a software for the detailed analysis of video clips and audio files of nearly all formats, designs and tastes. Though this does not yet make your computer an all-you-can-eat-device, it will provide a large amount of information, e.g. on how the problematic video is composed. And on top you get the possibility to outsmart your DVD-player by simply changing the identification of a clip, from Xvid to DivX for example.
The program recognizes and analyses the following video file formats: ASF, AVI, DIVX, MPG, MPEG, M1V, M2V, TS, MP4, M4A, M4P, MKV, MKA, WMV, 3GP, 3G2, AVS, MP3, OGG, WAV and WMA.
The respective clip can be loaded via drag & drop or a file selection menu. The displayed file info includes in addition to general details like name, size and playing time the bit rate, display of metadata (e.g. ID3Tag for MP3) as well as DRM and file format.
The latter are - among others - AVI (DV Type-1/2, DivX), MPEG (MPEG 1/2, VCD, SVCD, MPEG-M1V, MPEG-M2V, VOB), MP4 (e.g. Nero Digital), 3GP, 3G2, PSP, WMV, ASF (e.g. Nintendo DS), Ogg, MKV (Matroska), DVD, MVR, DVD+, QuickTime (MOV) and Real Media.
Supported audio formats are Wave, MP3, MPA, MPEG-M1A, MPEG-M2A, Matroska Audio, Real Media Audio, AIFF, AIFC, AU, IFF, PAF, SD2, SF, VOC, V64, MAT, PVF, XI, HTK, SDS, AVR, AC3, DTS, LPCM, AAC, APE, MAC, FLAC, CDXA, Audio CD, Vorbis and AMR.
As for the supported DRM-techniques, these are "iTunes protected", "iTunes free", "Windows Media 9 protected", "Windows Media 9 free", "Windows Media 10 protected", "Windows Media 10 free", "DivX protected", "DivX free", "css protected", "css free" and "css wrong region".
