Extended Ping can test servers and network components just being 'alive'. Extended Ping (Eping) Extended Ping, Eping for short, is a simple IP-based utility that I created for testing servers and networkcomponents just being 'alive'. It periodically tests all the
ip-addresses and/or hostnames in the grid and alerts if one or more cannot be pinged for a number of times. Being a networkmanager you needed such a software in a fairly small network-environment, where SNMP or Openview are too much, too expensive or too complex.

How does it work? After starting Eping, it represents itself as a grid with five buttons at the right; Settings Clear Find About Exit The only thing you have to do to start testing, is filling in the column 'Address' and clicking the Eping-icon at the right (above the five
buttons);

Of course it is advisable to add related information as 'Location', 'Description' and 'Comment'.

In case Eping cannot reach a specific ip-address after a number of tries, a popup-window appears with date, time and message;

This history is automatically saved when you exit Eping and loaded at startup. You can also edit the text.

When Eping succeeds in reaching an ip-address, it fills in the responsetime in the first column on the left '[ms]'.

The buttons Eping-button; This button starts and stops testing the ip-addresses in the grid. Especially when testing an ip-address which gives no response, Eping can take a while to react to a mouseclick.
Clear-button; This button presents a window which gives the possiblity to clear the entire grid.
Find-button; Can be convenient when looking for an address, location, description or comment in a large network.
About-button; Gives information about the author (me) and a short documentary.

Settings-button;

Alarm treshold is the maximum time it can take to test an ip-address.
When this time has past, the test failes.

Alarm after When Eping failed a number of times for a specific
ip-address it gives an alarm. The alarm is audible and/or via the
history-window.

Ping interval This is the time between two tests for two ip-addresses.

StayonTop The Eping-window stays on top of all the other windows.

Audible alarm Speaks for itself.

Autosort With this option on, the grid is automatically sorted on [ms] after each test, the longest responsetime is presented first in the grid.

Resolve Automatic translation from ip-address to name.

More information on Eping All the information in the grid, the history and settings are automatically saved on exit and loaded on startup.

Eping consists of four files; Eping.exe Eping.cfg, this is where the settings are saved. Eping.his, this is the historyfile, this file can be editted. Eping.lis, this file contains the grid-entries.

Saving the setup of Eping in the files above and not in the registry because copying Eping and related files is much easier this way without having to fill in the grid again, adjust settings, etc.

Eping is almost everywhere provided with hints.

Eping has a limit to the number of entries, this is set to 99. Let me know if you need more.
