The easy and inexpensive way to analyze your data. Data Desk is a fast, easy-to-use data analysis package that has been helping people understand their data since 1986. Data Desk provides interactive tools for data analysis and display based on the concepts and philosophy of Exploratory Data Analysis.

Data Desk implements many traditional statistics techniques suitable for data from planned experiments and sample surveys. However, the program's true strength is its powerful tools for data exploration. These tools simplify intuitive examination of your data. No special training in statistics is needed for these insightful graphic displays.

Subset analysis is performed with user-defined indicator variables called Selector variables. Selector variables may be assigned in a variety of ways. The most direct method of applying a selector variable is to drag the selector variable into the analysis you want to restrict. All Data Desk analysis tables and some plots allow selector variables to be dragged into them.

Another way to apply a selector variable to a display or table is to select the icon of the selector variable and choose {Selector} Assign Selector from the plot or table's HyperView menu. When you assign a selector, take care that only the selector variable's icon is selected.

The Data Desk Help system accesses a file that contains information on how to interact with the program. Related topics are connected with hypertext links. Topics are searched using keywords or a hierarchical table of contents.

The data analysis example in this guide starts with basic graphics and simple statistics. We gradually introduce more sophisticated methods as the analysis unfolds. The example analyzes the Companies datafile supplied on your disk.

1 Launch Data Desk
Double-click the Data Desk program icon, or select it and choose Open from the File menu.
Data Desk's first screen has four buttons offering the most common initial actions: Open an existing file, Paste data from Clipboard, Enter data from keyboard, and Help. We will work with an existing Data Desk file, but let's consider the menus first to give you an idea of where to find commands.

2 Examine the Menus
A program's menus tell you much about its capabilities and organization. Even with the initial display on the screen, you may examine the menus and select commands. Data Desk menus are organized according to their function.
