Every paint program has a colour dialog window from which you can choose any colour you like. The trouble with most of them is that the saturated colours are very prominent and it is quite difficult to choose subtle shades such as pastel colours for textual backgrounds or interesting colours like olive drab oe dark umber. 'Colour Wheel' uses a novel method of displaying and choosing colours which I find a lot more helpful. While it isn't a lot of use as it stands, you might like to adapt it for use in your own 'paint' program.

All image processing and drawing programs provide a color picker which enables the user to select any desired color. Every program seems to employ a different way of presenting these colors and some are definitely not as good as others.

Most offer a choice between the simple RGB system and a more sophisticated HSV ( hue, saturation, value) system. In this article I wish to explain the relationship between these two systems and explore the possibility that there might be other systems more suited to the task of picking colors.
Please note that these images will not reproduce the full range of colors available as they are .gif images and are restricted to a mere 256 colors.
