ClearTweak allows us to change the contrast setting of the ClearType setting for Windows XP. It can improve the way our fonts look. If we have never messed with Clear Type, which is off by default in XP, we probably are not getting the best possible resolution of our onscreen fonts. Not to worry, though. Rather than fooling around with Microsoft interface, Clear Tweak takes care of the issue, and does it better. Microsoft shipped Windows XP with full knowledge that laptops, with their LCD screens, were becoming more and more popular. Traditionally, Windows fonts do not show up very well on LCD screens.

To solve this problem, Microsoft created ClearType, which employed anti-aliasing to make Windows more readable. ClearType is designed to enhance LCD displays. It may appear slightly blurry on standard desktop monitors. It does not hurt to try ClearTweak on a CRT monitor. Even though ClearType is designed for LCDs, some people see an improvement on CRTs. With Clear Tweak ability to adjust contrast and so forth. If we have a LCD, it will definitely make a difference. ClearTweak requires Windows XP or later versions of Windows that support the Microsoft ClearType Technology. We must have a video adapter and monitor that support a color setting of at least 256 colors. Best results are achieved with High color (24-bit) or Highest color (32-bit) support. It is a 1.1 MB download, and well worth the bother. Equally popular now are LCD flat-screen monitors, making ClearType even more valuable. The problem is that ClearType is not always that clear. Sometimes it makes Windows fonts appear blurry on certain monitors.

This is especially true on traditional CRT monitors. (Yes, ClearType was not designed for CRTs to begin with, but anti-aliasing, done properly, can still benefit CRT monitors.) Now we can fine-tune ClearType using the ClearTweak utility. ClearTweak is freeware, but ioIsland will accept donations (via PayPal) as encouragement to update ClearTweak as well as write additional programs. ClearTweak runs only on Windows XP. That is no direct fault of ioIsland itself. ClearTweak requires ClearType, which is available only with Windows XP.

We can download ClearTweak directly from ioIsland Web site. If we have a Notebook computer, give ClearTweak a try, it will significantly improve readability on our screen.
